Noisy sectional door
The most common cause for a noisy sectional door is dry hinges that cause the door to creak and groan as the door passes through the arched section of the doors tracks. In most cases you can lubricate the hinges yourself to restore the door to quiet operation. But if your door is at the point that you feel that it needs this attention then it’s a good sign that your door is also in need of a general service.
If you are hearing more of a chunking sound when the door is lifting then your problem might actually be binding torsion springs. Lubricating the springs might help with the sound but if your springs are binding then you may just be covering up a more serious issue.
Jamming or Staling
Jamming or stalling is a symptom with many potential causes. In some cases you may just need to lubricate your doors moving parts but other causes need specialist attention. I have written two articles on the subject that walk you through the issue titled “my door won’t close” and my door won’t open. The links to those articles can be found on the home page.
Auto reversing
Are you having problems getting your door to stay closed. Or perhaps it gets most of the way down but goes back up again. Then you need to get your sectional door looked at as soon as you can.
If your door is making it all the way to the ground but goes back up again, then this is referred to as grounding. The most common causes for this problem are faulty limits on your door opener, your concrete may have lifted or one of your doors cables is damaged.
Alternatively, if your door gets close to reaching the closed position but stops and goes up again then your doors springs might be binding or your side bearing brackets, that hold the torsion shaft in place, might be splaying out under the load of the door and seizing up on the torsion shaft.
Damaged Lifting Cable
If you have noticed a gap under one side of your door then you should take some time to thoroughly inspect your garage doors cables. The cable is the only thing that holds your door in place and is supposed to keep your door level. A gap under on side of your door is a sign that one or both of your cables have deteriorated and may be ready to snap.
Uneven cable length, due to cable wear or damage, can also cause your door to jam, stall or auto reverse.
It is recommended that you stop using your door until your cables are replaced.
Torsion Springs
Sectional door torsion springs counterbalance the weight of your door allowing your opener to move the door up and down with relative ease. During the time of installation the installer adds tension to the springs by winding then around the torsion shaft until the load is equal to the weight of the door.
Over the years your springs stretch making the door heavier than it should be. With the door out of balance it becomes harder for the door opener to lift the door and eventually your opener will stall under the extra load. With proper adjustment balance can be restored to you door as part of a service visit.
In some cases your garage door springs can snap. When this happens your door will become far too heavy for your opener to lift the door and your springs will need to be replaced.
Luckily I carry a large range of springs onboard the service van, to suit most door sizes, and can usually replace them straight away.
Broken hinges
Overhead sectional doors are made up of 4 or more rigid horizontal sections that span the width of your garage opening. The hinges on your door serve to connect these sections together and also give your door a point of articulation when transitioning from the vertical position (closed) to the horizontal position (open).
For most brands of garage door your side hinges also hold your wheels in place so it is important that they are kept in good condition
Whether your hinges are plastic or metal they can suffer from stress or fatigue. Breakage isn’t common but when it does happen it will likely prevent you from using your door. If you notice damage to any of your hinges you should stop using your door and get them replaced.
Worn side bearing plates
Sectional doors are heavy and all of that load hangs off the bearing plates that hold the torsion shaft in place. Hidden behind the cable drums the bearing plates are out of sight and can wear badly without being noticed.
Bearings play an important role in the operation of your door and they need to be properly lubricated at all times. Dry bearings can seize and stop your torsion shaft from running free. When this happens you may hear a high pitched squeal or your door might become harder to move.
